About Us
The "Kings of Fishers" are the Project PLUS class from Howell Middle School South. We have 24 students and are participating in the UNLESS contest with our science teacher, Mrs. Gianelos. In the past we have participated in other competitions including the STEAM Tank Challenge, Verizon App Challenge, Scholastic Olympics, and the Academic Bowl.
Our Project
For our UNLESS project, we have created informational material as well as this website which features all of our components to inform the public of the situation of the Guam Kingfisher. We will create a pollinator garden, bird boxes, and raise quail to help wildlife in our area and have created aquaponics systems to solve the water problem of overuse of water for irrigation.
Kingfisher
The Guam Kingfisher is a species of Kingfisher that is currently extinct in the wild due to the unintentional introduction of the brown tree snake to islands they inhabited. Zoos like the Philadelphia Zoo are breeding them in captivity in hopes that they might one day be reintroduced to the environment.
