Aquaponics

A Brief Description

Aquaponics are a great way grow plants and raise fish, while saving energy and water all at the same time. Our UNLESS team choose to specify in water and one of our ways to save it is aquaponics! Aquaponics is simply the combination of agriculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants) without soil. The simple, self-sustaining system works as the fish provide food for the plants, and the plants naturally filter the water for the fish tank. The system consists the fish tank and the grow beds with a small pump moving water between the two. Aquaponics is much better for the environment as it uses 90% less water and fewer fossil fuels. While using aquaponics, harmful pesticides and herbicides cannot be used as that would kill the fish in the tank. Aquaponics doesn’t need the harmful fertilizers since the fishes’ waste naturally fertilizes the plants. It can be used in cities and allows more land to be used for farming. To help businesses, it also grows 6x more food per square foot as traditional farming. This lets farmers earn more money with less land. And not only do these grow crops, they also can produce fish that can be sold and eaten. If consumed the fish products will not give you diseases such as E. coli since they are cold-blooded fish and they have tons of protein.
